Terrarium 1, Preparation

Things that need to be considered is the selection of preformance making terrarium containers, planting medium composition, choice of plants, placement in space, and maintenance.

 1. Terrarium container

Terrarium container shall be of material transparent to opaque or translucent and light easily visible from the outside plant. Suitable terrarium containers include glass or plastic. Glass better than plastic because glass is able drain water transpiration results back to the media.

The containers are typically used, among other things, a wine glass, glass bottles, glass jugs, bowls, plates, and the aquarium. Bottle containers can be used vertically or horizontally. The shape, size container, and the size of the mouth of the container will determine which plants should be selected.

2. Selecting the type of plant

The principle is to maintain a moist terrarium through a cycle of water in it so the plants can grow without watering in a long enough period of time. Therefore, this type of cactus is not suitable to be placed in the terrarium.

Terms of plant selection is as follows:
  • Plants with small leaves that do not overlap.
  • Ornamental plants with a variety of leaf color, leaf shape and arrangement. Flowering plants less suitable for terrarium because it requires a lot of light.
  • Plants that require the same environmental conditions.
  • In general, plants that used to live in damp and shady suitable for terrarium, for example lichens, ferns, moss, fittonia, syngonium, and scindapsus.

3. Equipment for making terrarium

Tools that are needed include:

  • Gravel, coarse sand, or shards of pottery
  • Charcoal as dedorized
  • Media in the form of a sterile soil or compost
  • Sand, gravel, or zeolite

Composition thickness of each of the planting medium is set balanced. But in general the media volume of approximately one third of the volume of the container.
